HERDSA 2009 The Student Experience

6-9 July, Charles Darwin University, Darwin

This year's theme is The Student Experience with keynote speakers addressing three core areas:
  • What is the one thing we can do to increase student engagement and success on our campus?
  • Diversity and the student experience: targeting specific student needs in a multi-sector university.
  • Taking the distance out of off-campus learning.
Lorraine Sim is presenting a poster session on 'First Semester, First Year: Generic Skills Development in the Humanities' on day two of the con. Jane Mummery will be presenting a paper co-authored with Elise Morten-Allen titled 'The development of critical thinkers: do our efforts coincide with students' beliefs?'. I'll be attending the workshop Educating the Net Generation and look forward to sharing resources from the ALTC project with you.

Howdy folks,

Finally got round to posting a response to Marnie's post. HERDSA was great. My paper went extremely well - large audience and I had a lot of interest in the (to my eyes commonsense) point that a classical discipline such as philosophy can in fact be extremely effective in teaching generic skills such as critical thinking.

Probably the best thing about HERDSA though (aside of course from what were some excellent papers and discussions) - and the reason I attend the conference every couple of years or so - is that it's really effective at re-invigorating me with regards to reflecting on how I can teach better. I am looking forward to trialling some very interesting practical teaching strategies this semester that I picked up from various sessions (with the session that Lorraine presented her poster in being particularly useful). It's also good - in a sick kind of way - to hear that the kinds of issues to do with students engagement, attendance etc that we are dealing with are also commonplace in the experience of others.

Finally given that HERDSA is in Melbourne next year (2010), maybe the School could commit to encouraging our sessional staff to attend? I attended my first HERDSA as a sessional and gained a lot.

Cheers, Jane.
